Some months later, the images and sounds were still there. Mont Blanc began with them.
The piece grew out of what remained after twelve days around the Mont Blanc massif, as an echo of its scale, stillness and unrest.
Minimal, weighty and slow-moving, Mont Blanc is built around two melodic motives and stark, dissonant harmonies. Virtuosity and ornament are deliberately absent; the music is reduced to its essentials.
Serious and restrained, the piece moves slowly, carrying a persistent sense of tension beneath its surface.
The photograph accompanying Mont Blanc was taken during the same journey and remained, like the melodies themselves, present throughout the composition of the piece.
